Lekker, maar niks met de game te maken.

Redline

Post by Kieron Hellblade » 02 Jan 2012 13:05

Voor wie zin heeft in een compleet over the top ADHD Mad Max / Mario Kart / Speed Racer / LSD trip van een film; Redline

Redline is a 2009 animated science fiction racing film by Studio Madhouse. It is a visually stunning animated film produced over seven years with over 100,000 hand-made drawings.

It is a high-energy science fiction film about people racing hyperfuturistic vehicles... with the main character driving a souped up Trans-Am. It's like watching a slightly more serious science fiction take on Wacky Races. And everyone is doing speed. And then things explode.

Following his dream, "Sweet" JP becomes a racer and gains a large following because of his retro-style sense of fashion and his frequent and spectacular end-of-race crashes. Against all odds, he manages to qualify for participation in the galaxy's most prestigious, most deadly, and most insane no-rules race: Redline.

Unfortunately for JP, the race is being held on Roboworld, the isolationist military junta planet who are not only opposed to the race being held there, but also have said that they will mobilize their military and kill everyone who dares to violate their space.

'Redline' is Takeshi Koike's debut film, and it is... well, remarkable. It is "anime", in the sense that it is a Japanese animated film, but it is in so many ways un-laden with the typical tropes and baggage that those works are often associated with. Here is artistic excess brought through dynamic action, coupled with a well-matched soundtrack. It is not a particularly deep work; it is devoid of any real dynamic character development or intricate narrative. But Redline doesn't really need one, nor does it particularly try for one. Redline aims to keep you engrossed in a hurricane of visuals, sound, action, and adrenaline.

Redline is a spectacle of a film. It's fun, energetic, and attention-demanding. It has also managed to fail to adequately hype itself at almost every juncture. In Japan it had limited release and, while well received, has managed to avoid getting a lot of attention. Even here in the West, it has received little publicity despite some rather well-received festival appearances. The Tohoku earthquake this year didn't help in building attention for its home-video release (not that it would have sold well in Japan anyway), and further delayed its release in the United States to early next year.

This film won't be appearing on the big screen over here with any wide distribution ever. It has had some limited theater release, but that's it. Which is rather tragic, given the amount of time and effort that went into making this brilliant work of art. It's a film that even people who typically loathe "anime" would enjoy entirely. It is... bloody COOL.

Get this movie. Get the Bluray. Then watch it as loud as fucking possible.

US Release: January 17th, 2012. Order on Bluray, Order on DVD
UK Release: Available. Order on Bluray Order on DVD

If you somehow manage to find this in a theater or festival near you, for the love of god go see it.

Ik heb er echt gruwelijk van genoten, maar als je nogsteeds niet overtuigd bent helpen deze quotes je misschien;

Watched this movie with a friend a good while ago. It was the sort of movie I kept going "Ok this is one of the best character designs I've seen in a while. No no, THAT is one of the best characters designs I've seen in a while" during the whole movie. Also I was delighted by everyone's name choice.

Seriously, watch this film, it's cracking. Redline is brilliant.

This movie is amazing front to back, and it would still be amazing even if they removed everything but the giant gel baby with atomic breath fighting a psychic-controlled space whale

But luckily, that's just the icing on the cake. It's like if someone was told what Days of Thunder was like during an acid trip.

Just watch it, okay?
